For two years, I lived with my parents, five siblings, and a dog in a chicken coop. In her debut novel, "Someday I'm Gonna," Lillian Longuski Escott recounted her years of traveling across Depression-era America in desperate search of work. In her follow-up book, "The Lean Years," the family has finally reached the Promised Land of Washington State. Or, at least, they hope they have. But the trials of the Longuski family are from from over, as they must weather the turmoils of the isolation of living in the country, finding work in the burnt-out railroad yards of the west coast, and attending a new school. Told from the perspective of the author’s pre-teen self, "The Lean Years" is a poignant, inspiring story about coping with loss and change, about holding on and letting go, and about the perseverance of the bond between family.

After reading "Someday I'm Gonna" I knew there needed to be a second and possibly a third book. One can only imagine the heartbreak and fear that must have been running through this family as they traveled into unknown territory. Growing up in rural Port Hope Michigan, she must have known and trusted her neighbors, and then to encounter things a yound child should not even have to. We pick up bottles and cans to clean our roadsides, they did to survive. I feared for the two youngsters as I read the book. We all need to take a step back and appreciate what we have.
This book was a quick read and it makes you laugh, gasp and wipe away tears. This is true depression history and would be a great read for the classroom. I'd recommend it, as well as the first book, to any history teacher.

I liked this book but, I wanted more. I wasn't ready to stop reading. Cant wait till the next one comes out. I'd recommend it for men and women.
This is her second book in the series detailing her family's challenge in surviving the great depression of the 30's,
Love the descriptions of where and how they had to live on the road from Michigan to Washington,
It is a book you can't put down but left wanting more to see how each individual manages to thrive in
their environment.
Billee has been my neighbor ever since moving to Washington. I knew she was a special lady, but I truly had no idea. Reading both her books, Someday I'm Gonna and The Lean Years showed me what an amazing life experience she had and that you really have no idea about what anyone has been through until you take a closer look. Billee made me laugh, she made me smile, and she brought me to tears. She made me absolutely furious at some of the characters and made me side with others. When a book brings you emotion like that, that's when you know it's worth reading. Billee has an amazing voice and an admirable story to tell. I would recommend reading them in order and I can't wait for the third book to come out!
